Of all of the problems we class as ‘eating disorders’ the one that tends to take the longest to sort out is anorexia nervosa. It can be done, though, and good self hypnosis recordings can really help people.

Anorexia statistics

Anorexia is an illness that is said to affect between 0.5% and 1% of Americans, and 90%-95% of these sufferers are adolescent girls and women. The disorder usually starts in early adolescence or mid adolescence, is one of the most common psychiatric problems for younger women and is one of the most dangerous of the mental health conditions in that it has one of the highest death rates.

The main symptoms of anorexia nervosa

These include a huge fear of gaining weight and a revulsion of body fat, especially the person’s own body-fat, a literal distortion of what the person looks like, sometimes a total denial that there is a weight problem and very often the girl or the woman has no menstruation.

What to look out for with anorexia nervosa – the warning signs

Warning signs include excessive weight loss, thinking about food and weight and calories and diets all the time, being ‘unable’ to eat certain types of food, talking about being overweight a lot, not admitting they are hungry and having elaborate rituals around food. The main thing, of course, is the total preoccupation with food and weight.

Anorexia nervosa heath problems

These include low blood pressure, slow heart rate and the eventual risk of heart failure, weakness, dehydration, osteoporosis, hair loss and the growth of downy hair over the body (to keep the body warm!)

How can self hypnosis recordings help with anorexia

Self hypnosis recordings literally train your mind, and they do this in a variety of ways. Repeated suggestions to be healthy, fit and lean and relaxed about food will have a cumulative effect. The issue is that they may take some time to have a beneficial effect and someone suffering from anorexia, due to the debilitating symptoms, tend to give up if they aren’t getting results. It becomes just another thing they tried and failed at.

Being persistent

So it is vital that the person gets into the routine of listening, after all, most of these recordings can be played every night at bedtime so the only effort involved is pressing the ‘play’ button on the CD player or MP3 player.

NLP and anorexia

Some recordings, such as Debbie Williams’ ‘Stop Anorexia’ also provide simple NLP mind-training exercises. Debbie suffered from an eating disorder herself when she was younger and really does understand how difficult it can be to overcome issues such as anorexia without the appropriate kind of help. As a practising NLP trainer and hypnotherapist her recordings are based both on personal experience and more than ten years clinical experience specialising in eating disorders.

Stop Anorexia Nervosa is also available from the UK.
