There are a number of tried and tested methods to help someone to eat a sensible balanced diet, to stop overeating or stop binge eating. If you were to closely follow the following regime it would almost certainly work for you:

• Only eat when you are hungry • Eat slowly, very slowly, and always put the knife and fork down while you are chewing. Really focus your mind on the taste of the food. • Eat whatever you want to • Just eat when you eat, don’t watch TV or read a newspaper whist eating. • Stop eating when you are full

These are proven methods to help someone eat well. They do have some drawbacks, though.

• It is very important to eat breakfast every day, so what if you are not hungry at breakfast time? • How do you get into the habit of eating slowly? • The idea of eating whatever you want to seems bizarre to those who overeat. Wouldn’t this make overeating and binge eating more likely? (no, by the way) • How can you have a social meal with the family, or a business lunch, if you are focussing only on the food? • How do you know when you are full? • How do you stop overeating when you are full?

Many others, however, try to adopt these principles but find themselves slipping back into old habits, and it seems to them that trying to eat this way was just another ‘diet’ that didn’t last.
