The Many Forms Of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

So many different styles of thinking and behaviour are described as ‘OCD’ that it’s difficult to know where to start: Before the symptoms are listed it is important to make the point that people suffering with OCD do  generally rationally understand that their fears are irrational, but that ‘understanding doesn’t help. In fact it tends to make people self-critical, or angry, or depressed or more anxious, and so forth.

Anyway, here are a few common ‘symptoms’

  • Fear of contamination. This fear can cause a range of feelings and behaviours from mild to extreme. Examples would be repeated hand and/or body washing or repeated cleaning of the kitchen, the bathroom, or the whole house. Extreme forms of this can even result in someone washing themselves in bleach! This form of OCD can also either make it extremely difficult from someone to go outside or sometime even impossible.
  • Fear of disease. This can be very closely related to fear of contamination and can result for example, in someone being afraid to sit in a chair that they know has been sat in by someone with cancer, or aids or whatever.
  • Repeated checking. This is when someone has to check, for example, that the oven has been switched off, over and over and over again.
  • Rituals to avoid bad things happening. Some people get stuck in a loop where they get the feeling that unless they perform a series of rituals, bad things will happen to them or someone close to them. These rituals can involve virtually anything, but a common example would be tapping something a certain amount of times.
  • Obsessive thoughts. Another common form of OCD that can involve virtually anything. A reasonably common example would be obsessive thoughts of a sexual nature.
